What you need to pay attention to is where do you and these other people live?
Let's take motivational speaking for an example. The information I am about to give you is based off my research based in the United States.
Motivational speaking is on a decline while it is taking off in the UK and Australia.
In the U.S., corporations are using people that have been speaking for them for years and most of the work is coming out of California for one company and they're based in Georgia.
I called speakers bureaus and they are only using top celebrities, well-known New York Times Bestselling authors who have been on TV a lot and are basically a household name, astronauts and Olympian participants who have received gold medals.
I have heard from the family, that their 30 year old son said he was considered a dinosaur in the field of motivational speaking. Corporations want speakers in their 20's to speak to their young twenty-something personnel so they can relate to the image. You and I can deliver the same message only the audience won't relate to what we "look" like.
I see people having webinars and selling information about motivational speaking - that you can have a successful career speaking on any stage in the world! This is quite a broad statement that will speak to anyone whose passion is speaking. People are making money off the ignorance of others.
Do your research. Yes, it can be daunting and take five plus hours but isn't that worth your time and energy?
You are told that you can base all of your business off the Internet - do webinars only. I took a webinar where the speaker, who is from the United States, said to do only webinars because the money isn't coming in otherwise and he has had a motivational speaking career for 20 years!
While this information sounds bleak, there are areas of motivational speaking that are still plugging along - IT, Corporate Sales, Physical Training and Nutrition.
Watch the speaking trends for your country and do your research to see if this is the best time for you to go into motivational speaking. It can take 5 to 8 years to build a full-time speaking career. It can also take longer.
My advice is if you are dead set on being a motivational speaker, do something else on the side that pays the bills until your speaking career is consistent and pays you to keep a roof over your head, your bills paid, clothes on your back, maintenance on your vehicle and food in your stomach.
